CFRT XPS sandwich panel is a new type of foam sandwich panel that uses CFRT (continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic) sheet as the skin and XPS (extruded polystyrene) foam as the core material. We know that XPS foam core sandwich panel is a lightweight thermal insulation material that is widely used as an insulation panel.

CFRT XPS Sandwich Panels

Compared with FRP or metal (galvanized, aluminum, stainless steel)-skin sandwich panels. The advantages of CFRT XPS sandwich panels are:
  • More Lightweight: The density of CFRT sheets is 1.0~1.6g/cm³, which is much lower than any metal material and slightly lower than FRP, but its thickness can be thinner than FRP sheets.
  • More Sturdy and Durable: CFRT is made of multiple layers of continuous fiber-reinforced thermoplastic prepreg tapes laid at different angles. It is full of toughness and can quickly rebound and restore its shape after being hit. This is a property that metal and FRP materials do not have.
  • Easier Installation: CFRT XPS sandwich panels are easy to cut, which makes installing them easy and fast.
  • More Economical and Affordable: The cost of CFRT sheets is lower than that of FRP sheets. Using CFRT sheets in large quantities can save a lot of costs for the project side.

  • The surface of the CFRT sheet is covered with a protective film to enhance its anti-scratch performance and provide aesthetic effects.
  • The middle layer consists of multiple layers of UD tapes laid in different directions. (usually 2~3 layers)
  • The non-woven fabric at the bottom allows it to be well combined with other material systems.
XPS Foam

How to Increase The Structural Strength of CFRT XPS Sandwich Panels

The sandwich structure strength of XPS foam and CFRT sheets alone cannot support a larger area of composite panels. The self-weight of the panels will change the shape and even break. At this time, structural strength-enhancing materials should be embedded inside the sandwich panel, such as aluminum tubes, steel tubes, timbers, fiberglass profiles, etc. These materials are pre-embedded inside the sandwich panel, which not only increases its strength and nail-holding power, but also greatly facilitates access to external facilities, such as the installation of water pipes and wires.
